My Mario Party game
June 2022 - September 2022
For the sake of simplicity, let's call this game "Party".
Party was basically my own Mario Party game on GameMaker. I was making it for my friends so we could all have fun.
Unfortunately, things did not go well for me during Summer of 2022, so I couldn't work on the game as much as I wanted.
Nevertheless, some progress was made! The current state of the game has:
- A working "coins" mode, basically winning the game if you have enough coins
- A working (but badly coded) minigame system
- Extremely unfinished but working main menu
- Controller Support Thanks to this library
- Kinda working item system
- The ability to buy stars
But as you can see from the screenshot and videos above, the game's presentation was... very placeholderly.
I had a ton of ideas for the game, such as a Valve board which would be based on Valve's games and characters.
My favourite idea however has to be GMan. Randomly on a turn, he would walk up to the current player and ask them to do... something and they would get a reward from their objective. I don't remember if I was thinking of having a penalty for failing to do what they are told.
Anyway, I tried implementing this idea, but I only made the offer event and if you accept his offer, he would say "Wisely dome [name]! I'll see you up ahead" before softlocking the game...
The main reason why I stopped working on the game was because I lost motivation to continue working on it, but also because a multiplayer Mario Party game doesn't really have much potential to be fun in 2D.
However, the game has taught me quite some stuff about GameMaker, which is nice.
